Tiny Seeds, Big Joys: How My Balcony Garden Came to Life

This project reminded me of how much joy comes from paying attention.

This is an ad-free premiere of a vlog that will be posted tomorrow on YouTube. If you prefer, you can watch it on my YouTube channel (with ad interruptions) here.

When I first started this little balcony garden, I thought it would be a cute project—something simple and seasonal. But like so many things in life, it became much more than that. It turned into a daily ritual, a source of peace, creativity, and even a little magic.

In the beginning, I was just checking on the soil each morning, eager and a bit impatient, wondering if anything would grow. And then—finally—it did. One morning, I spotted the first green shoots pushing through the soil. So small, so delicate. But they felt like a promise. That something was happening beneath the surface, even when I couldn't see it yet.

And isn't that just like life?

This project reminded me of how much joy comes from paying attention. The rain came, the skies darkened, and I couldn’t sit outside like I wanted. But the garden didn’t stop growing. Nature doesn’t need us to watch her bloom—she just does. All she needs is a little care, and time.

I also got creative in ways I didn’t expect. After noticing one side of the balcony felt a little "underdressed," I headed back to the dollar store and got to work. Solar lights, buckets, fake flowers—tiny treasures that brought balance to the space. My favorite part? Hanging little bouquets above our mattress nook. It turned a practical corner into a charming one. And no, they’re not real flowers, but they still bring a real smile.

Some nights, we stay out there late—talking, eating sushi, watching the lights glow softly around us. These moments are quiet, but powerful. They make our home feel more alive. More us.

I still don’t know what I love most about this garden—the thrill of seeing new growth each morning, or the cozy joy of candlelit dinners under string lights. Maybe it’s both. Maybe it’s the harmony of routine and surprise, of hands in soil and hearts at ease.

If you’re thinking of creating your own small sanctuary, do it. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just start with one pot, one seed. Add something each week—a light, a flower, a chair. Before you know it, you’ll have a space that reflects your joy back to you.

With sunshine and soil,
Luciana 🌱
